Driving to Budapest Airport from abroad: route, vignette, parking
Travellers from Slovakia, Romania, Serbia and eastern Austria often fly from Budapest and drive to the airport. Here is which way to come from each border, which motorway vignette you need for the trip there and back, how much spare time to allow, and where to leave the car while you are away.
Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport does not only serve Hungary. From Bratislava to Košice, from Oradea to Arad and from Subotica to Novi Sad, it is the nearest large airport for many people, with direct flights to most destinations. From almost every border it is motorway all the way to the terminal, and the drive takes two to three hours. Three things are worth sorting out in advance: the route, the vignette, and where the car will stand while you are on holiday.
The route from the border to Budapest Airport
The airport is on the south-eastern edge of Budapest, next to the town of Vecsés, and is reached from the M0 ring road. That is good news: whichever direction you come from, you do not have to cross the city.
From Austria and western Slovakia: from Hegyeshalom (Nickelsdorf) or Rajka (Bratislava) you take the M1, then the southern section of the M0 around the city. In normal traffic it is about two hours from the border. The M1 is being widened between Budapest and the Concó rest area until 2029: two lanes each way stay open, but they are narrower, the speed limit is lower, and one accident causes a queue sooner than elsewhere.
From central and eastern Slovakia: from Šahy (Parassapuszta) you take road 2 and the M2, a little over an hour and a half. From Košice the M30 starts at the border at Tornyosnémeti and joins the M3 at Miskolc, and the eastern section of the M0 brings you to the airport: about two and a half hours.
From Romania: from Nădlac (Csanádpalota) the M43 leads to Szeged and the M5 from there to the M0, about two and a quarter hours. From Oradea you join the M4 at Borș (Nagykereki), continue on the M35 and the M3 to the M0: close to three hours.
From Serbia: from Horgoš (Röszke) the M5 runs straight to the M0, roughly an hour and three quarters from the border. Here the border itself is the uncertain part; more on that below.
Hungarian motorway vignette 2026: which one do you need?
Hungarian motorways and the M0 have no toll gates: you need an electronic vignette (e-matrica), which is tied to the number plate and checked by cameras. For a passenger car (category D1) the 2026 prices are 5,550 forints for one day, 6,900 for ten days and 11,170 for a month.
On an airport trip, the catch is the drive home. The ten-day vignette is valid on its start day and the nine days after it, so:
if you are back within ten days, the ten-day vignette covers both directions and costs less than two one-day ones;
if you stay longer, buy the monthly one: it is cheaper than two ten-day vignettes, and you do not have to buy one on your phone, tired, on the evening you land.
Buy the vignette on the official site of the Hungarian toll operator (nemzetiutdij.hu) or at the petrol stations near the border. Check the number plate and the country code twice when you buy: a vignette with a mistyped plate is not valid. If you have joined a motorway without one, you have 60 minutes to buy it. The surcharge for a passenger car is 27,790 forints, two and a half times the price of a monthly vignette.
How much spare time should you allow?
Plan to reach the car park no later than two and a half hours before departure. That covers handing over the car, the shuttle to the terminal, bag drop and security. Add the driving time to that, and then a margin on top:
From Austria, Slovakia and Romania there is no routine check at the border, as all three are in the Schengen area. Half an hour to three quarters of an hour for the M1 roadworks or a queue on the M0 is usually enough.
From Serbia the wait at Röszke can be anything from twenty minutes to several hours. Since April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has been running at every external Schengen border, and travellers without an EU passport have fingerprints and a facial image recorded on first entry. Check the current waiting time before you leave, allow at least two hours' margin in season, and keep Kelebija–Tompa in mind as the alternative when Röszke is jammed.
For an early flight, many people drive through the night. If you can, come the evening before and sleep near the airport: you pay for one more day of parking, but you board rested.

Budapest Airport parking: where do you leave the car?
There are many guarded car parks around the airport, a few minutes from the terminal. You leave the car at the car park, and its own shuttle takes you to the terminal and back. For the same dates, airport parking prices can differ by as much as double, so it pays to compare: the full list, with prices, is in the comparison of Budapest airport car parks.
Arriving from abroad, three things matter most:
Book ahead. After two or three hours at the wheel you do not want to hunt for a space among full car parks. A ParkoLow booking can be cancelled free of charge, and you pay only on site, on arrival. The steps are shown here: How to reserve airport parking in Budapest on ParkoLow.
Put the car park's address into your navigation, not the airport's. The exact address and the car park's phone number are in the confirmation email. Save it to your phone so that you have it without mobile data.
You pay on site, by card, in forints or in euros. Prices are in forints and are paid at the car park on arrival. Bank cards are accepted everywhere: the charge is made in forints, so your own bank converts it at its own rate. Most car parks also accept euros in cash, but expect an exchange rate slightly worse than the mid-market rate.
After landing you phone the car park and the shuttle collects you at the terminal. If your flight is delayed, tell the car park as soon as you know. After a late-evening landing, the two or three hours home are the riskiest part of the trip: if you are tired, stop at the first rest area and sleep for half an hour.
